Hi, I'm Elisa!

Here's how my homeschooling story went viral in Brazil.

The story

In January 2021, I took the ENEM, Brazil’s national college entrance exam. My score put me in 5th place for Civil Engineering at the University of São Paulo, the best university in Latin American according to US News' Best Global Universities 2022.

Unfortunately, because I was homeschooled in a country where this isn't regulated, I did not have a high school diploma and, therefore, could not enroll. Even worse, I would not be able to acquire such certification until August 2022, when I would finally be old enough to take the Brazilian GED.

In light of these facts, my family and I filed for a preliminary injunction. Our request was for me to take all high school exams immediately to prove my competency. so that I could then get a diploma early. Similar cases, albeit not ones involving homeschooling, but only accelerated students, had been successful in the past.

At the same time, we contacted the local press in hopes my story reached the judge responsible for my case and humanized the bureoucaracy. To my surprise, this story reached not only her but the entire country.

Since then, amidst interviews, lives, and rising social media accounts, I had the opportunity to speak out for progressive education. Through it all, I have emphasized the importance of stimulating each student's individuality and innovating basic education so that it fits the 21st century better.

Here are some highlights and results.

Homeschooling legislation

After the story went viral, several homeschooling bills  that had fallen through the cracks of the bureaucracy suddenly gained the spotlight. While the merit for their approvals goes fully to the respective legislators and their political prowess, I am still proud to be part of the movement and cherish my small part in raising awareness, demystifying the subject and contacting representatives.

  • Sorocaba (my city): the bill had been stagnated for months, but as soon as the media coverage came out, Dylan Dantas, the author of the proposal, thanked me personally. According to him, my story had convinced the majority of the council to vote in favor of the bill. Needless to say, a few weeks later, the regulation was formally approved and sanctioned. However, it unfortunately didn't last long; a short time after, the Judiciary filed an injunction for the legislation to be this. We have been fighting that battle ever since.
  • State of Rio Grande do Sul: a bill by Fabio Ostermann, a state deputy with whom I shared a live streaming on Instagram, also passed in 2021. However, it was later vetoed by the governor.
  • State of Santa Catarina: a bill by Bruno Souza was recently sanctioned in the state of Santa Catarina. Sadly, it was also revoked by the Juduciary shortly after.
  • State of Paraná: a bill by state deputy Márcio Pacheco was passed and sanctioned in late 2021. It was the first state to regulate it in Brazil.

Social Media Experience

When the news broke out, hundreds of people found my social media accounts and started asking all kinds of questions, ranging from study tips to homeschooling legislation. Because of that, I decided to dedicate these venues to helping others with learning and education as a whole.

Nowadays, I run a successful Instagram account as well as a still-growing Youtube channel.

Scholarships

  • Silicon Valley: the company StartSe offered me a full scholarship to spend a week-long immersion in Silicon Valley, all expenses paid. The program includes tours through the largest tech companies in the world, entrepreneurship workshops, and innovation seminars. As of right now, we are just waiting for the Covid-19 situation to stabilize before we book a date.
  • Dual-credit courses: the homeschooling program Christian Halls granted me a full scholarship for two remote dual-credit courses by LeTourneau University. I have chosen Computer Science I and II, in which I learned the fundamentals of C++ and Java programming.
  • American high school diploma: the online, accredited, Florida-based WorldEd International School generously offered me a full scholarship to attend senior year, take AP courses, and acquire an American diploma by mid 2022.
  • Brazilian high school diploma: Colégio Horizontes, in São Paulo, also granted me a full scholarship to regularly finish high school by December 2021, which I have succesfully accomplished.

Honors

  • Councilman Dylan Dantas gifted me a Congratulatory Letter unanimously signed by the City Council for my homeschooling performance.
  • Weeks later, I also received a Congratulatory Letter from the São Paulo State Legislative Assembly.

Internships

  • In April, Thiago Nigro, a popular finances influencer with over 284k followers, publicly offered me a job via a tweet. We talked privately soon after, but I unfortunately could not manage a full-time position and my studies at the time. Even so, he was incredibly kind to let his marketing team edit my Youtube videos and give me social media tips.
  • Around the same time, StartSe also offered me an internship. However, I had to  decline it due to scheduling conflicts.
  • T3, an information security start-up, is the company I chose to work with. Their internship offer involved cryptography and plenty of programming, which seemed like a great way to get firsthand experience in different specializations inside the computer science field. It is where I have been working ever since.
